Questions

Can I really charge interest if my contract says nothing about it?

In the UK and the EU, yes: the late payment laws give a business the right to statutory interest and a fixed compensation on an overdue invoice to another business, even when the contract is silent. A contract can set a different rate, but in the EU it cannot simply remove the right. Invoices to consumers follow different rules.

From which day does the interest run?

From the day after the due date until the day the client pays. If no due date was agreed, the EU rules generally use 30 days after the client received the invoice or the goods or services.

What is the fixed compensation?

A flat amount per overdue invoice for the cost of chasing it: at least 40 euros in the EU, and 40, 70 or 100 pounds in the UK depending on the size of the debt. You can claim it on top of the interest.

Do I add VAT to the late fees?

Statutory interest and the fixed compensation are compensation, not a supply, so in most countries no VAT is added. The invoice this tool creates leaves them without tax.

Will claiming interest hurt the client relationship?

Sometimes it is the push that gets an invoice paid. Many freelancers mention the right in their payment terms and claim it only when a client is very late. The amount is yours to decide: you can always claim less than the law allows.

Is anything I type saved or sent?

No. The calculator runs in your browser and does not store or send the numbers you enter.
