Questions

How do I add VAT to a price?

Multiply the net price by 1 plus the rate. At 20%, a net price of 100 becomes 120: 100 of price and 20 of VAT.

How do I remove VAT from a price that already includes it?

Divide the price by 1 plus the rate; do not just take the rate off. At 20%, a price of 120 holds 20 of VAT, not 24.

Which rate should I use?

The standard rate covers most goods and services. Reduced and zero rates apply only to the items each country lists, such as some food, books or transport, so check the official list before you use one.

Do I charge VAT to a client in another country?

Often not. Services to a business in another EU country usually fall under the reverse charge, and exports are often zero-rated, but the rules depend on the country and the service. When in doubt, ask your tax office or an accountant.

Is anything I type saved or sent?

No. The calculator runs in your browser and does not store or send the numbers you enter.
